Morning

6 a.m. Sunrise at Makapu’u Point

If you're up early — and thanks to jet lag, you likely will be — take advantage of one of Oʻahu’s most breathtaking ways to start the day: a sunrise hike to Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse.

Just a 30-minute drive from Waikiki, the 1-mile paved trail (each way) takes about 25–30 minutes to reach the summit, gradually climbing along sea cliffs with sweeping views of the windward coast, Koko Head, and the vast Pacific. At the top, the sun rises directly out of the ocean, lighting up the lighthouse and coastline in soft, golden hues.

No special gear is needed — just walking shoes, a light layer, and your camera. And if you’re visiting in winter, keep an eye on the ocean. Makapu‘u is one of the best vantage points for spotting humpback whales breaching offshore.

8:30 a.m. A Coastal Detour

Before settling in for breakfast, take a few extra minutes to follow the coastline north — one of the most scenic stretches on Oʻahu.

Just 5 minutes from Makapuʻu, the road hugs the cliffs until you reach the Halona Blowhole Lookout, a natural lava tube where ocean waves force water high into the air. Depending on the swell, you may catch a spectacular spray timed with the rhythm of the sea. To your left, look down at Eternity Beach, a tiny cove made famous by old Hollywood but beloved now for its rugged, cinematic beauty.

Continue around the bend and you’ll reach Sandy Beach, a favorite among local bodyboarders and often called “Breakneck Beach” for its powerful shore break. Stay on the sand — this beach is best admired from the safety of the lookout. Morning light casts a golden shimmer across the waves, and it’s often quiet this early.

It’s the perfect digestif for your Makapuʻu experience — dramatic, open-air, and quintessentially Oʻahu.

10:00 a.m. Brunch on the water

Now that you’ve earned it, settle into a slow, satisfying brunch at Heavenly Island Lifestyle, tucked into Koko Marina Center. This local favorite is bright, organic, and full of aloha — with a lanai that looks out onto the water and a menu that hits the perfect balance of indulgent and nourishing.
